We had the pleasure of hosting an exhibition opening night for Annie Schutzinger, a most incredible Australian textile artist.
Annie’s beautifully textured pieces, with their softness and vibrant colours, brought the Jatana showroom to life. The rooms were filled with lively conversation, laughter, and joy, infusing the cold night’s air with a palpable energy and warmth.
It all began when Sonya discovered Annie’s work at an exhibition in Sydney, where she was immediately drawn to Annie’s collection, GRACE. This collection, characterized by colour, story and texture, quickly formed a bond between the two. Sonya, inspired by Annie’s talent, invited her to showcase her work in Federal Byron Bay.
Many people love clothes, but only some can execute the shapes and silhouettes Schutzinger has managed in her recent work. As a former interior designer and lover of art inspired by a lifetime of creativity, this can firmly be seen in her pieces that channel wearable art through detail, colour, and knitted wool. All of Annie’s pieces are made by her hands and crocheted with one single needle!
Annie Schutzinger has always been creative, but it wasn’t until later in life (she is now 85 years of age) that her imaginative side began to manifest through fashion. “I’ve been to art school for live drawing, and an art studio working with other girls over the years, [but] fashion I’ve always loved—to wear, to think about, to inspire,” the designer says.
