BITS ‘N PIECES A.K.A ‘the bargain bin’
I think it’s safe to say that we all have a lot of bits…when I say ‘bits’, I mean clutter, I mean extra stuff, I mean the leftovers! It is, after all, part of the tiles journey, that some are left behind after orders have gone out, not on purpose of course and usually not huge amounts. I have sat back realising as much as I love our random selections, our random piles of tiles, it’s really time to free up the space and move these collections on and into places like yours; where they will be featured with glory!
With all that in mind, consequently, for the first time in 8 years I’ve decided Jatana Interiors is having a sale on ALL the bits! Only now do I realise actually how many BITS we have!! While I consciously or maybe subconsciously ignore the random encaustic, antique, glazed and terracotta tiles that lay around the sheds either on shelves or in nooks and crannies for all these years (I secretly love clutter and all things messy!) I think it is time to acknowledge their need for a new home and therefore I am very happy to share my bits.
It is actually quite exciting to now venture into this realm of the “bits and pieces” as I discover there are still many more beautiful designs available to sell. I have loved going for adventures into the sheds and exploring the piles, coming up with designs that really deserve more than collecting dust in one of my sheds. While they may be leftovers from past stock, this does not mean that they are less important, if anything, perhaps even more of a treasure especially now as they go on sale. They hold their exquisite beauty and are so ready to travel elsewhere…they told me! Sonya it’s time, we want a new home!!
Now don’t be shy to mix and match what you see in the bits and pieces category! Why not discover the fun of a patchwork using antiques or reproduction tiles, or add a splash of flair and colour to your kitchen, bathroom or laundry with some glazed feature tiles. It is now time to give your home that refresh you have been wanting, and with these tiles on sale it makes it an easier option!
All encaustic, antique or glazed tiles are perfect for: fireplaces, borders of any area, kitchen splashbacks and bench tops, doormat and tile rugs and any under-cover areas like patios, verandahs and bbq areas. While there are so many options, you can still get so creative with your patterns and your layout. I LOVE seeing how people choose to display their tiles along with their own bits and pieces to compliment the space.
The beauty of these tiles is that they will NOT age and if anything, improve with age.
Check out our Sale – Bits ‘N Pieces page on our website to see all the available beautiful tiles now on sale.
Patchwork encaustic tiles
Firstly, a patchwork of encaustic or antique tiles is a great solution when you can’t decide on just one pattern! (Which I know can be very hard!!) Just like matching a tile to the style of your house or the colour of your walls, patchwork can be tricky but so worth it…There is a definite art to matching tiles, it comes down to colour and pattern. In my view there needs to be a flow of pattern, a smooth transitions between tiles is essential. Furthermore patchwork is very powerful yet extremely beautiful. It is very enjoyable to create as every combination of encaustic tiles/antique tiles helps to create an atmosphere/ mood. Patchwork will always be in trend, it always has been and it always will be.
A montage of encaustic tiles is very eye-catching, perfect for a bathroom floor, feature wall or even around a fireplace.
From my experience over the last 12 years and after meeting many clients who are trying to create a point of difference and a space that will leave an impression on someones mind, there is no doubt that a montage will always be the best way to create this. Particularly in a commercial project where the first impression and last impression are so important. You want the image of the space you have entered to be wow. You want it to be a conversation piece . It will be the place that stands out because of the stunning patchwork or montage of tiles. After all, a colourful and welcoming floor instantly makes the space alive. It is mood evoking.
A montage can be as simple as using anything from 2 tile designs and creating a simple chequerboard, to a tile rug design in a neutral pallet to a complete mix match of colours and designs to create a wild and energetic floor.
There are so many ways to create a rug design and this is where you can decide which is most suitable to the mood you would like to evoke.
A patchwork wall is also a beautiful way to make a feature in your home, whether its just a small splash back that you want to give some attention to or an entranceway that instantly gives life to your home, from the moment you walk in.
Come check out our show room as we have a huge floor of patchwork encaustic tiles that I’ve designed myself. As a result people can visually see the idea of patchwork and inspiration from it too. I am always putting tiles together, I do it every single day and I am happy to design a patchwork of encaustic tiles or the antique tiles for you.
Moroccan glazed tiles
I am so in love with these glazed tiles, they are so stunningly unique and mesmerising. Every piece is created individually etched and then glazed giving them a very special character. These beautiful treasures have travelled all the way from Morocco !! I am itching to see them installed either on a feature wall, splash back or even a fireplace!! Due to their charm, these tiles excite me so much as they exude beauty and style. Furthermore these tiles really set a mood within a space, it is important for them to be placed appropriately as they are very powerful. Paradoxically these cheeky tiles can be ‘sly’ as they seem delicate and have a sense of simplicity however when pieced together they are the perfect level of intensity.
The light teal, forest green and the dark olive green resonate well with all colours, in my opinion anyway (I am a colour enthusiast). I think I am in love….
New at Newrybar Merchants
So excited to now be apart of the beautiful team at Newrybar Merchants, my small display feels like it really fits in with the beautiful group of creatives. It humbles me to be apart of such a flourishing design, art, interior community of Byron. My nook truly reflects my aesthetic as its cluttered with my glazed tiles, antique tiles, reproduction encaustic tiles. Being around like minded people sparks new thoughts for patterns and inspires me to continue what I do and love- sourcing glazed tiles and antique tiles and designing reproduction encaustic tiles. My display is on the deck which perfectly aligns with my product as they are all indoor/outdoor encaustic tiles. The house itself that Newrybar Merchants is in is an iconic house in the area which adds another layer of special. Be sure to check it out.
I love my newish showrooms. As the range of encaustic tiles have expanded over the years I have had to expand my showcase capacity……and still don’t have enough room…..but enough for the lovely clients who come to visit, just an idea of what we have (which is daunting enough)!. The sample packing shed has now doubled up as another showroom floor and the carport has doubled up as a showroom wall….I am all for multi tasking! We have been fortunate to have some images taken by the amazing Mark Lane, founder of www.lanewayphoto.com and recently www.tarasamuelson.com.au for the incredible Sarah, creator www.chasingunicorns.com.au. I absolutely love to create new designs for the reproduction range in my encaustic tiles and more recently more hand-painted glazed tiles which are vibrant and glossy. I love them all! They all serve a purpose and they all make a space become alive.
We now have new members in the family!
Rich in colour and highly resistant to stains and moisture, Jatana’s collection of hand-painted glazed feature tiles transform kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls into stunning works of art.
Often referred to as ceramic tiles, their gorgeous, glossy finish is the result of a thin coat of liquefied, non-porous glass applied to the surface during a second firing of each tile. This process creates a beautiful, timeless lustre. And… every tile is lovingly hand-painted piece by piece.
Crisp blue with white, classic black and white, navy blue with floral accents – Jatana’s glazed tiles are as distinct as they are durable.
With no sealing required to create an instant sparkle to your wall, these glazed feature tiles are now very much a part of our range.
I love a spontaneous trip! Last weekend I decided to visit Adelaide in the spur of the moment. I have never been and wanted to check out the Mayfair Hotel which was refurbished in 2014. I was happy I did! The refurbishment looks amazing and of course the encaustic tiles really feature…..its so nice to see a fitout that you were involved in a few years down the track. It is great to see the wear and tear on the tiles in a high traffic area such as a bustling hotel. As the encaustic tiles are a thick tile this makes them perfect for a high traffic application. They are durable and very long lasting, infact they become more durable as time goes by, hence the antique tiles in my range. If you ever go to Adelaide for a little business or pleasure, I recommend the Mayfair.
When you receive a new shipments of antique tiles it is like opening a treasure chest. The designs that you chose come to life. More than often they are more beautiful in real life than imagined. These encaustic tiles, all hand made over 100 years ago ,each design with a history of its own and many stories to tell (only if they could talk) are irreplaceable and truly special. Of course these beautiful antique tiles come with the imperfections that you would expect however this only adds to their character and personality. Walking on a floor laid with history definitely has a special feeling and to give them a second life feels even better.
